Marvel Movies: Awesome idea or Blunder waiting to happen?

Logging off: A collection of personal stories about what’s going on in my life, on a given weekend.

This weekend is Mother’s Day weekend, but not to be forgotten it’s also the opening weekend of a movie called Thor.

f you’re not familiar with Thor he’s the god of thunder who carries a giant hammer.  Now Thor is the latest in a long line of Avengers movies that Marvel Studios is building up to in which they bring together all of their classic icons for one giant epic slugfest called Avengers.  This Avengers buildup started in the credits of Iron Man and was followed in order by The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and now Thor, with Captain America(it’s called Captain America in my head) and the Avengers soon to follow.

As a comic fan I like this idea of building continuity in the movies and giving us a giant payoff.  I like the fact that all of these characters exist in the same universe and share many of the same characters and ideas.  My inner comicbook dork likes how SHIELD Agent Coulson appears in both Iron Man and Thor, and how Tony Stark’s dad pays a pivotal role in creating Captain America.  This is all building up to Summer 2012′s Avengers movie that is supposed to have all of these characters unite against a common enemy, but what happens after Avengers?  Yes, as a society we like to see spinoffs of our favorite characters, but what happens when they become too cluttered for the average movie goer.  Do we really want to see the Iron Man movie that was made 5 years ago, to know who what SHIELD stands or why Samuel L. Jackson pops up at the end of Thor, or for that matter why has Hulk been played by three different guys in the last 10 years?

I understand that sequels are a part of Hollywood, but do we really need this many superhero movies?  Even as a ex-comicbook fan I worry about this.  These movies are so interwoven together, I feel that if you miss one, you’re going to miss them all, or is that just movie?  I know one thing though, the Avengers movie is going to be either a box-office smash or a flopt, there is no in between Joss Whedeon’s epic tale, but but what do you think?  What do you think 2012 holds for the Avengers or for superhero movies in general?
