2011 My Year in Review

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

2011, wow it’s been been a crazy year. What did I learn? Wow, there’s a lot.  Here are 8 truths that I learned in 2011 that I will be taking with me to 2012.

1.  Always take a chance.  An unexpected beach trip introduced me to a whole ton of new people this year. Thank you again, Eric Price.
2.  Always remember your friends and family.  This year has had it’s ups and downs, but my family’s always had my back through it all.  Thank you, guys.
3.  I love a big city.  Growing up in a small town, I can only speak in words how much I love living in a big city.   I have had some adventures in Raleigh and I’m sure that there are many more still to come.
4.  Accept failure.  Failure will come. I’ve failed this year, plenty of times…but I know if I’m not failing, I am not trying.
5.  Be a sponge.  Knowledge will take you a lot of places, always look for more opportunities to take you to the next place.
6.  Wine is your best friend.  Trust me a good glass of wine can solve anything.  Thank you Autumn, for sharing this with me.
7.  Stepping outside of your norm. is good.  Sometimes you just have to be spontanous to see the other things in life.
8.  You have to want it bad.  We live in a crazy world and if you really want something you have to grab it.  You have to make the sacrifices that most normal people wouldn’t make.  You have to want it bad.

Facebook 101: Your Favorite Pages.

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

A Facebook feature that I have seen used wrong lately is a page’s favorite pages.  Now if you have no idea what I am talking about, pick out your favorite Facebook brand, such as Disney for example, and view the pages likes, about two-thirds down the page.

Disney Facebook page

I have found that most marketers simply do not know how to use this feature.  A lot of companies have liked to irrelavent pages, that either have nothing to do with the brand or are simply fan pages that have been discarded and uncared for.  Whoever is in creative control of Disney sure knows what they are doing…however some brand simply have no idea, what to like.  Why does Author James Patterson like Tyler Perry?  Why do the Raiders like NyQuil?  Or for that matter who are all of these european guys on the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘s page.

People need to realize that this section is a way to link to other relavent pages.  Disney does a good job of this, as well does Snickers, Victoria Secret, and National Geographic.  These pages all like relative pages to the main page, which is the way it should be done, not just a shamless plug to another page.

You might not think about it, but these pages do mean a lot.  They reflect on the brand and your self as well, often times leading the consumer to other relavent content.  S

o next time you’re managing your page, think about who you like, because that like can go a long ways in the eyes of the consumer.

The Black Friday Madness

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

I’m writing this the week of Thanksgiving…errr Black Friday.  Black Friday’s one of the biggest shopping days of the year and even Google realizes it.  That’s why they are offering their Chromebooks at the crazy price of $299.

Now, cheap computers are nothing new on black Friday as it seems like, everybody will be off searching for that low priced gift that they can give to a loved one whose going off to college or moving away, but for Google this is something different.

Google’s ChromeBooks when intially launched in July, were considered to be a lower priced computer but have still yet to catch on in the open market and this deal stinks to me, as a let’s throw these things against the wall and let’s see what happens.

Google has it’s hands on way to many cookie jars right now from search to social media, from now computers to Android devices.  That there long term marketing strategy remains totally unclear and in the case of the ChromeBook, not developed at all.  There are only so many products that you can throw a brand name on and I’m thinking that the ChromeBook might be one of them.

So will you be buying a chrome book this Christmas?  Or is there some other gift that you’ll be looking for, maybe a Kindle Fire or iPad?
